While the principles are the same, there are some differences in the way she approaches the method. In 2018, Jessica Brody, an author and writing teacher, adapted Snyder’s screenwriting concept and applied it to writing novels. Of course, your hero doesn’t actually need to save felines, they just have to do something… heroic. ‘Saving the cat’ refers to the idea that your hero must do something early on in the story to make them likeable, i.e. They are a series of ‘checkpoints’ your story should hit to ensure a satisfying and well-paced arc for your novel. Think of a story beat as a defining or critical moment for your characters and your story. In it, he maintained there were fifteen key story ‘beats’ over ten different genres that make for bestselling scripts and compelling stories. The original Save the Cat was penned by Blake Snyder in 2005 where he coined the famous phrase. So romance is front and center while the super hero and sci-fi aspects are secondary. The book really focuses on Ava's relationship with Gwen, an A-list actress, both as Gwen's competent but bumbling personal assistant and as her secret identity, Swiftwing. She's a mix of insecurity and lack of confidence while also having strength and integrity. I can't say I've read this combination before and I liked it.Īva, our lead and the super hero in the story is endearing. The book is an odd mix of sorts: Super hero story, romance, Hollywood, fake relationship, ice queen, age gap, boss/employee, aliens, and something akin to King Kong. That said, I also felt there were elements holding it back from being really great. My impression was that I was left with a lot of affection for the book and primarily the character of Ava. This story has a lot going for it and I was compelled to finish. ![]() ![]() The "trainites," a group of violent environmental activists, want him to lead their movement the government wants him dead and the media demands amusement. ![]() Large corporations fighting over profits from gas masks, drinking water, and clean food tower over an ineffectual, corrupt government.Įnvironmentalist Austin Train is on the run.
